How Does Matrix Repatterning Work?
The Tensegrity Matrix (a.k.a. the Matrix) is responsible for giving our body its structural integrity. It is formed by a continuous connection between every cell, creating a web-like structure which responds directly to physical injury.
The Matrix is a strong, flexible, continuous fabric that has the ability to disperse a certain amount of force (vibration). However, when this force exceeds a certain level, it travels to the deep denser structures in the body. The densest substances in our body are water and bone. So when we have a fall, the force from the impact travels to either our internal organs or bone, and causes the structure of the cells to expand and become more rigid, which in turn, changes the electrical current or charge. We can actually see visual evidence of this because the actual bone expands, changing shape and in turn, puts stress on the soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage) around a joint. |
Since the Matrix interconnects all cells, the area of injury (called the primary restriction) can result in strain - and pain - in many other areas of the body. These strain patterns change the way we move, which in turn, strains other structures (joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles) that were not directly involved in the initial injury.
How Matrix Repatterning is Different...In Both the Approach and Outcomes
In this video Dr. George Roth DC, ND, CMRP, the developer of Matrix Repatterning, explains how this technique is fundamentally different to other conventional soft tissue treatment approaches.

Pain is NOT the Problem!
In today's society, pain is usually perceived as a problem and dealt with by silencing its presence by the use of medications.
But pain is not the enemy, it is the creative way our body has developed to communicate to us that we are out of balance. Therefore, the more we silence the messenger, the more out of balance we become -- pushing us further away from our body's innate ability to heal itself. Matrix Repatterning goes past this superficial approach to pain and deals with the source responsible for the imbalance. |
When we injure ourselves, the injury site will be painful for only a short period of time (typically 2-3 weeks). The reason for this, is that our brain prioritizes pain and causes you to be aware of intermittent or changing symptoms, such as pain, more readily than a constant source of irritation. For example, if you fall on your hip, the hip will be painful for only a short period of time. As you unconsciously compensate in your movement for this injury, other parts of your body will move in such a way that puts strain on them.
Therefore, over time the original injury site will become background pain and the discomfort that occurs intermittently at the other joints/tissues that have to compensate for the primary restriction will present themselves as the primary pain/complaint. So often times where the pain is, is NOT where the problem is.

Treating the Source, NOT the Symptom
Matrix Repatterning is showing to significantly enhance the results obtained by other manual therapies because it treats the problem at its source.
Tight muscles, joint instability and dysfunction are secondary to a deeper source of dysfunction. This is why manual therapies that only address symptoms, often result in temporary relief. The difference between Matrix Repatterning and other manual therapies is that it treats the problem at its source. Research is showing that when the structure of the cell expands to accommodate for the excessive force, the strain pattern that develops in the Matrix will continue to cause structural changes throughout the entire body, leading to pain and discomfort until these restrictions are removed. Often times, temporary relief from your pain/discomfort can be achieved from the help of many manual therapies, but Matrix Repatterning offers a permanent solution. By returning cellular structure to its balanced state, it is once again able to function optimally, allowing the body to thrive as it was designed to do.
